''The Town That Drowned'' is a coming of age novel by Riel Nason and was first published in Canada in 2011 by Goose Lane Editions. It has won many awards including ‘Winner 2012 Commonwealth Book Prize’, was a finalist in the 2012 'CLA Young Adult Book Award’ and was a Top 5 contender for 'CANADA READS’. Due to its success, the novel was published in Australia and New Zealand by Allen & Unwin in 2013.The novel is told by a 14-year-old girl named Ruby Carson and is based on true events set in the 1960s. Nason combined key elements of other CanLit novels to create ''The Town That Drowned''. The novel gives an insight of human nature and includes the awkwardness of childhood, thrill of first love and emphasises on how important it is to have a place to call home. == About the author == Riel Nason, author of award winning novel ''The Town That Drowned'', was born in Hawkshaw, a small town in New Brunswick, Canada. ''The Town That Drowned'' was her debut novel winning her many awards for her highly commended work. Nason grew up a small town with a population of about 35 people. She currently lives in Quispamsis, New Brunswick along with her husband and her two children. A small drowned town under the stretch of river, which was flooded in the late 1960s became the source of inspiration for her debut novel. She is a literary magazine regular whose work has appeared in the country's finest publication such as the Malahat Review, Grain, Toom and many more excellent magazines. Nason is off to the International Festival of Authors in Toronto to read alongside many other famous authors. Many of her short stories have appeared in literary journals all across the nation, and more than ten years she wrote a newspaper column on the topic of antiques and collectibles. Her debut novel was long listed for the 2013 International MPAC Dublin Literary Award.
